Re: GMC proposes single test for all doctors wishing to work in UK
Why does the GMC want to try something which failed so spectacularly in Australia?
Overseas-trained specialists who had practised exclusively in their field had little or no chance of passing the standard exam of the Australian Medical Council. They failed at a spectacular rate.
Only when the specialist colleges were prevailed upon to assess those specialists in relation to the 'equivalence' of their training and experience in their field were they able to demonstrate their high standards and obtain specialist registration.
A single exam at MBBCh standard is fine for young doctors who have not yet specialised. Not to have a pathway for specialist registration makes no sense.
