Edmund Augustine Dowling was born in Waterford, Ireland. After an internship as house surgeon at Burton General Hospital and Nottingham General Hospital in England, he emigrated from Ireland to the US in 1952. Joan O’Connor soon followed him, and they married in 1953. At the invitation of his cousin, Edmund began a residency in pathology at Baptist Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama.
