Educated at Radley, James Rowland Russell (“Jim”) studied medicine at Clare College, Cambridge. A committed Christian throughout his life, he set up a support group for disabled children in Cambridge and spent time working in a leper colony in Africa before qualifying from the Middlesex Hospital Medical School. It was soon after, as a house surgeon to Sir Thomas Holmes Sellors at the Middlesex, that he met his wife, Glenys, a Middlesex nurse.
