Frank Howard Beddow was born in Yorkshire, but his family moved to the Wirral when he was a child. He was educated at Birkenhead School, where he considered a career in engineering but eventually chose medicine. After house officer positions and two years in the army, he embarked on training in orthopaedics in Liverpool, which was a renowned centre in the subject.
