After qualifying Jean Alero Thomas (known to her friends and colleagues as Alero) worked as a house officer at the University Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria. In 1971 she moved to Lagos University Teaching Hospital, where her father, Horatio Orishejolomi Thomas, was professor of surgery and dean of the College of Medicine.
