The BMA has opposed a plan to allow patients to refer themselves for diagnostic tests for cancer.

Delegates at the BMA’s annual UK consultants’ conference in London on Wednesday 4 March voted unanimously in favour of a motion saying that a scheme to allow patients to self refer should not go ahead “without proper research.”

In January NHS England announced that patients would have the option to refer themselves for diagnostic tests without going through a GP as part of an early diagnosis programme for cancer.1
