Kate Granger: Quiet, determined, compassionate

Biography

Kate Granger, an acting consultant in geriatric medicine at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, has turned her experience as a patient with cancer into a successful campaign to give medicine a human face. Her campaign, “Hello, my name is,” sprang from her observation in an emergency department that few doctors or nurses spontaneously introduced themselves to patients. Her Twitter campaign rapidly gathered followers, as has her blog and two e-books, The Other Side and The Bright Side. “Little things” such as establishing a personal rapport are not little at all, she argues, but central to a human practice of medicine. Granger is 33.
