Professional bodies have joined NHS leaders in calling for new investment from the next government to help safeguard the NHS, after the publication of a major national blueprint for healthcare in England.
The Five Year Forward View, published on 23 October by NHS England and other national bodies, called for substantial changes to service delivery and a radical expansion in preventive care in the next five years to help reduce a projected £30bn (€38bn; $48bn) funding shortfall.1 But the report estimated that the next government would also need to invest an additional 1.5% above inflation each year (around £8bn in total) to close the funding gap entirely.2
