Elizabeth Gentles Sloan (née Higgins and known as “Betty”) was born on 22 December 1914 at home in Bathgate, West Lothian. Her father was minister of Dawson Memorial Church, Kirkcowan, and she underwent her secondary education at Douglas Ewart High School, Newton Stewart.
She enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine at Edinburgh University in September 1933. Her degree course was supported by a Carnegie scholarship.
