John Richard Stares Blake, always known as Richard, studied as a young man in the Merchant Taylor School in Northwood, north London. His early education was in many ways responsible for his whole attitude to life. He was unassuming, meticulous, loyal, unruffled, and a quiet academic. After qualifying he did his first house jobs at the Middlesex and subsequently in hospitals in north London.
