Although Ruth Gilly Arthur came from a distinguished line of doctors, she was determined to find her own path in the medical profession. Excelling at Nottingham University medical school, she made the most of the intercalated BMed Sci to undertake research in Zimbabwe into iodine deficiency disorders. This ignited a lifelong enthusiasm for working in Africa and worldwide travel.
