Sylvia Helga Houghton was born to a Midlands medical family. Three grandparents, both parents, two uncles and two brothers all qualified in medicine, so it was almost inevitable that Helga would read medicine. She was educated at Edgbaston High School and Sherborne School for Girls. After house jobs in Birmingham and a year as senior house officer at the Midland Nerve Hospital with Myre Sim, Helga and her husband, R B (“Bob”) Jones, a theoretical physicist, moved to London, where she researched the physiological effect of antidepressants with Ted Marley’s group at the Maudsley for two years.
