Paul Michael Anthony Bowden was sent to Coventry for a year by the prison officers at Brixton. Born the third of five boys, in Stoke on Trent, he survived an education from the Christian Brothers and left with a determination to alleviate suffering, particularly at the hands of institutions, and he was the Home Office psychiatrist at Brixton for many years. The foremost forensic psychiatrist of his generation, working at what was then the main remand prison for London, he gave expert psychiatric evidence in many high profile cases.
