Re: Association between alcohol and cardiovascular disease: Mendelian randomisation analysis based on individual participant data

As a layman with limited scientific resources, I am struggling to grasp the full implications of your new study. The mass news media narrative presents a picture in which your study implies that everyone would benefit from a reduced consumption of alcohol. Yet, based on my understanding of what I have read, your study seems to indicate only that you found a correlation between heart health and an aversion to/reduced consumption of alcohol among a subset of people with a specific gene that prevents their bodies from properly breaking down alcohol, hence they tend to avoid it.

I do not see how this applies to the population at large, i.e., those whose bodies (iIm guessing here) may have the genetic ability to process alcohol properly, if such a thing occurs.

The bottom line is that I'm hoping to sort out usable fact from mass media hysteria that typically and routinely accompanies studies such as yours. Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
