Geoffrey Charles Downing Dutton was born to Frederick and “Daisy” in Northwich, Cheshire. He attended Shrewsbury School and went on to study medicine at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, and the London Hospital, where he qualified in 1944. Because of the blitz he was evacuated to Warley Woods Hospital in Brentwood, Essex, to complete his preregistration year.
