Christopher James Rowland (“Chris”) was born in Croydon; the family was evacuated to Wrexham in north Wales at the outbreak of the second world war. He later attended King’s School, Chester. Chris had developed an interest in a medical career when quite young, and in 1953 he gained a place at Guy’s Hospital Medical School. He married his wife, Ann, in the year in which he graduated.
