India’s Supreme Court tells government to improve road safety record

India’s highest court has acted on an appeal from an orthopaedic surgeon to force the government to do more to improve road safety and reduce deaths from road traffic incidents.

In a landmark judgment on 22 April the Supreme Court of India directed the federal and state governments to implement existing road safety laws and said that it would monitor the actions of government agencies. A three member committee set up by the court will submit a report within three months on whether road safety legislation needs to be rewritten.
