Jean Margaret Euphemie Dickinson was part of a medical family. Her father, William Robinson Dickinson, was a general practitioner in Wombwell, Yorkshire. Her brother James and sister Mary both worked as GPs. Born in Barnsley, Jean started at Sheffield medical school, where her older siblings qualified. At boarding school she had received little science education, and so she failed her first MB examination. She then moved to study in Dublin, where her grandparents lived, and she qualified at the College of Surgeons there. …
