David William Bookless was born in Norwich and educated in Suffolk. He started reading medicine at Edinburgh University in 1939 but after a year decided to take a “gap year” (or five) and enlisted in the navy. He was a leading seaman in the ammunitions room on HMS Meteor, serving in the Mediterranean and the Russian supply convoys. On completing his commission he was stationed with bomb disposal in North Africa. …
