Nicola Jane Gilbertson (“Nicki”) spent her early years travelling round England and Ghana with her family; her father was a Royal Air Force medical officer. She went to five schools in her first six years. This did not seem to have held her back academically because she gained entry into Liverpool University Medical School and qualified in 1981. She was immediately attracted to paediatrics and trained in Newcastle and London. She gained her MRCP in 1985. After her senior registrar post at Charing Cross Hospital she was invited to take up the post of acting consultant, the post from which she was appointed at Royal Cornwall Hospital.
