South Korea’s national health insurer sues tobacco industry for $51.9m in damages

South Korea’s state health insurer has joined the ranks of countries suing the tobacco industry for the health related costs of disease caused by smoking. The country’s National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) announced on 14 April that it had filed a suit for damages of 53.7 billion won (£31m; €37.5m; $51.9m) from the local market leader KT&G Corporation and the local units of Philip Morris International and British American Tobacco.
