Maurice George Philpott was born in London and attended Hitchin Grammar School after his family moved to Welwyn Garden City in the early 1920s. At school he developed a deep interest in science and aspired to become a doctor from an early age. He was also a keen member of the school Scout troop, which developed his enthusiasm for travel, preferably with a Spartan edge. After qualifying, his early interest in paediatrics was marked by his attaining a DCH in 1944.
