Alan Eastling Ridley was born in Newcastle; his parents were Arthur and Nance Ridley. Arthur was a manager for British Rail, and Nance was a milliner. Alan grew up in Whitley Bay, an only child. He attended Whitley Bay Grammar School, where he excelled both academically and on the sports field. He maintained a lifelong love for rugby, cricket, and tennis, and was still playing squash in his 50s.
