David Aloysius Macfarlane’s initial surgical training was in Cardiff and Bridgend, but he then moved to St James’ Hospital, Balham, as surgical registrar and subsequently was tutor in surgery and casualty surgeon at St Bartholomew’s Hospital. In between these two posts he spent a period as a research fellow in surgery at Harvard University in Boston, USA.
