Jiri Karel Lintner was born in Czechoslovakia. He was studying medicine at Brno University when the Nazis invaded in 1939 and closed the universities. He left his home country and made the hazardous journey to the Middle East to join the British Army. He fought at El Alamein and was decorated. In 1942 he was seconded to Beirut University to complete his studies. He then returned to active service as a doctor.
