The transformation of mental health services in England over the past 30 years provides important lessons for those trying to develop community based alternatives to hospital care, a report from the King’s Fund says.1

Mental health services have changed from a model of acute and long term care based in large institutions to one in which most care is now provided in community settings by multidisciplinary mental health teams.
