Clinical guidelines are expensive to produce, both financially and in terms of the time invested by guideline development groups. The Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) budget is £25 000 (excluding staffing costs, which are 70% of the total budget) for each new guideline, which takes around 29 months to complete (personal communication, SIGN programme lead).
