Shortly after starting anaesthesia training at Charing Cross Hospital, Peter Kenneth Barnes took a short service commission in the Royal Air Force, which included two years in Singapore. A research post at the Westminster Hospital followed until, in 1976, he became an assistant professor of anaesthesia at the University of California, San Francisco.
