A fifth of all funding for maternity services in England, or around £700 (€840; $1125) of the total £3700 per birth, is now spent on clinical negligence cover, the National Audit Office has said.1 The figure is described as “absolutely scandalous” by Margaret Hodge, chairwoman of the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee.
