Hugh Michael Norman (“Mike”) found his training interrupted after his first year, when he caught polio while walking in the Pyrenees. He took a year to recover, and, with the help of a Morris Minor gifted by a favourite aunt, he was able to return to his studies on crutches initially and then a stick that stayed with him the rest of his life.
