One third of US women travel more than 25 miles for an abortion

In 2008 more than one third of women in the United States seeking abortions traveled more than 25 miles for care. Today the number is probably higher, says the Guttmacher Institute, which works to advance sexual and reproductive health in the US and around the world.

A study by the institute is the first to report how far US women seeking abortions traveled.1 Previous studies relied on estimates by abortion providers. The institute said that the study would serve as a baseline for trends, since states had placed more restrictions on abortion in recent years.
