David John Tooby was delivered breach by a midwife on the kitchen table. His childhood continued in poverty and hardship on various farms in rural Leicestershire. At the age of 14 he realised that his intellectual abilities (fortunately undimmed by his method of entry into the world) could be the ticket to a less constrained life.
