Florence Pauline Cowmeadow was passionate about art and literature. After obtaining a first class honours degree in English and fine art from Leeds University and an MA in History of European Art from the Courtauld Institute of Art, Pauline worked for two years as a nursing assistant at an adolescent psychiatric unit in St Albans. This inspired her to take up a career in medicine and psychiatry.
