A large Swedish study looking at the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders in children born after different types of in vitro fertilisation (IVF) procedures has shown a small increase in the prevalence of intellectual disability and autism after use of intracytoplasmic sperm injection with sperm obtained by surgery in infertile men.1
It also found that children born after singleton pregnancies showed no increase in risk of neurodevelopmental disorders, when compared with children born after spontaneous conception, which the researchers said provided further evidence to support the transfer of single embryos in IVF procedures.
