Born and brought up in north Wales, Helen Humphries contracted measles encephalitis as a child and was lucky to survive. She studied in Cardiff, and, after an intercalated BSc in anatomy, she qualified in 1985 with distinction in general medicine. House jobs in Wales were followed by a year as casualty officer in Sydney and by extensive travelling through Australia and southeast Asia. She returned to Wales and completed vocational training in general practice, based at Parc Canol Practice, Church Village, where she became a partner in 1996. After a career break of eight years to bring up her children she returned to general practice as a locum. She enjoyed the challenge of general practice, particularly in Dinas Powys, and will be missed by her patients. Helen consistently maintained a very high level of fitness; running and swimming almost every day. She leaves her husband, Alan; a son, Josh (13); and a daughter, Katie (8).
