Rhona Watkins was brought up in East Kilbride and educated at Park School for Girls and Glasgow University, where she graduated in 1977. After house jobs in Inverness and Glasgow Royal Infirmary, she trained in haematology in Glasgow and was appointed consultant haematologist in transfusion medicine with the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service at Gartnavel General Hospital in 1992, with responsibility for the medical management of the blood donor care programme.
