Ian George Logan Craig was born in Beckenham in 1919, the third of four children. His father, originally from Berwickshire, took his family back to Scotland at the end of the 1920s but died in 1932. The family then moved to Aberdeen, where Ian attended the grammar school. He gained a Carnegie scholarship to study medicine at Aberdeen University, but his studies were interrupted when he developed osteomyelitis. He was fortunate to survive without long term disability but bore the scars of the sequestra to the end of his life.
