Leaders of the main surgical specialties have said that they support the principle of publishing outcomes of individual surgeons in England but warn that some of the currently available data are limited and could be misinterpreted by the public.
The move comes as performance data for individual vascular surgeons in the UK is published for the first time this week,1 together with updated information on cardiac surgeons. The release of the data concerning 3500 surgeons will be staggered over the next few months. Five more specialties will go live in the next seven days, and three more will follow in the autumn.
