The author of this obituary expressed huge disappointment that the more personal conclusion he submitted fell victim to the BMJ's editing style. The original final sentences read as follows:
"He married Jenny Abramsky in 1976 and they enjoyed a rich family life with their son Rob and daughter Maia and a wide circle of family and friends who will miss his warmth, his infectious humour, his enthusiasm for skiing, cycling and travel, his infuriating superiority in every aspect of personal computing and his enjoyment of the very best wine."
