Daily use of sunscreen prevents ageing of the skinBMJ 2013; 346 doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.1136/bmj.f3586 (Published 04 June 2013) Cite this as: BMJ 2013;346:f3586
A trial of 903 adult Australians, all younger than 55 years, randomised participants to daily use or discretionary use of sunscreen (control group). Those in the daily use group had no skin ageing detectable by microtopography four and a half years later—24% less skin ageing than seen in the control group.
β carotene supplements were also tested against placebo. No effect on ageing of skin was seen, but the study was underpowered to exclude a beneficial or harmful effect conclusively.
