Joyce Fanny Elsom (née Grant) was born in London and educated at Henrietta Barnett School. From there she went to Girton College Cambridge in 1940, where she not only excelled academically, winning several prizes, but also won a half blue in netball. Between 1943 and 1946 she completed her clinical medical training at King’s College Hospital, where again her outstanding academic talents were recognised, and she was awarded a Rockefeller scholarship for further study in the United States.
