Regulators are preparing to put Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust into administration to safeguard services for patients. It will be the first foundation trust to have to be rescued in this way.
The board at Monitor, the independent regulator of foundation trusts, decided in principle on 27 February that appointing a trust special administrator was the only option to preserve services at the troubled organisation.
