The General Medical Council will be given legal power to check the English language skills of doctors from other European countries who seek to practise in the United Kingdom, the government has said.
A public consultation will be held in summer 2013 on amendments to the 1983 Medical Act that would strengthen the GMC’s power to check doctors’ language skills.1 A consultation on the role of responsible officers is likely to give employers more powers.
