Athol Hepburn was born and educated in Aberdeen. After house appointments he joined the Royal Navy for a short service commission. After two years at sea, including the Gulf and East Indies, he moved to the Fleet Air Arm at Lossiemouth, specialising in aviation medicine. He then transferred to the Royal Naval Reserve, based at HMS President in London, where he served for a further 24 years.
