Alan William Fowler was brought up at Wokingham, Berkshire, where his father was medical superintendant at Pinewood Sanatorium. He trained in orthopaedics at Halifax and Winford, near Bristol. He was assistant and later consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Bridgend General Hospital from 1953 to his retirement in 1986.
