Tonio Borg, the former Maltese foreign minister who has taken over as the European Commissioner for public health and consumer protection, has promised to make new European Union legislation for tightening rules on tobacco products his top priority.
He gave the commitment to the European parliament during a three hour public hearing just eight days before the MEPs approved his nomination on 21 November by 386 votes to 281 with 28 abstentions. Once the EU governments have formally approved the appointment, Borg is expected to be working full time in Brussels from 29 November.
