Peter Charles Collinson was born in Rotherham and educated at Sheffield University and Saint Bartholomew’s Hospital. After house jobs he joined the Royal Navy and spent the next year embroiled in the battle of the Atlantic serving as ship’s surgeon on HMS Hurricane, escorting convoys to keep the British war effort supplied.
