The health secretary Jeremy Hunt has pledged to stop a “worrying and completely unacceptable weakness in the regulatory system” that would potentially allow a hip prosthesis with dangerous design flaws on to the market.

Jeremy Hunt’s comments come in the wake of a joint undercover investigation by the BMJ and the Daily Telegraph that involved submitting a fake application for a metal-on-metal hip implant for approval in Europe.
