The foundation programme for newly qualified doctors is oversubscribed for the third year running, the UK Foundation Programme Office has confirmed.

It has, “as predicted,” received more applications to the foundation programme starting in August 2013 than places currently available.

As a result, applicants who do not provide proof of their right to work in the United Kingdom by 16 January 2013 will not be considered. These applicants will be withdrawn from the national process, and the numbers will be published on 21 January 2013.

The foundation programme was oversubscribed by 184 applicants in 2011 and by 81 applicants in 2012, but in both years everyone on the reserve list was allocated a place before the start of the programme (May 2011 and March 2012, respectively).

The UK Foundation Programme Office has said that it will work closely with medical schools to ensure that pastoral support is in place for applicants who are placed on the reserve list in February 2013.
