The United Nations has revised the number of people who are starving or undernourished to just under 870 million, from an estimate of one billion three years ago.

The UN’s report State of Food Insecurity in the World 2012, published by the Food and Agriculture Organization and other UN bodies ahead of world food day on 16 October, said that better methods and data had resulted in the new figure.1
